Welcome to the Gisborne YMCA.
One of the most common questions that we are asked is "what is a YMCA"
The Gisborne YMCA is a charity that believes in the potential of people and our local community. At the Gisborne YMCA we believe that our mission is to provide a diverse range of programmes and services that make a positive social impact on the Tairawhiti region.
The YMCA is about relationships within the Gisborne community.
The YMCA is a place for everyone. At the YMCA we believe that everyone should be able to participate in recreational, educational, health & wellbeing programmes like those offered by the YMCA, regardless of their ability to pay the fees. We endeavour to find subsidises that are available to enable people to particiapte, subject to meeting removing barriers or Work & Income requirements. That is because the YMCA is open for everyone - all ages, backgrounds, abilities and financial circumstances
The YMCA builds strong people. Its for this reason that the YMCA is committed to improving the lives of children and families in our communities by providing safe places, caring and trained staff, and programmes that teach life skills. Whether its a place to go after school, a helping hand with homework, a place to learn leadership skills, or a place for the family to play and connect, the YMCA is there. Its what we do to build strong kids, strong families and strong communities.
The Gisborne YMCA has been a presence in the Gisborne community since 1880, when James Rosie immigrated from England and settled in Gisborne. We are proud that our YMCA has served the Gisborne community for over 127 years.
We provide a vast range of high quality programmes at affordable prices to our community.

Congratulations to Paikea Whalers for the win last weekend in the local competition, and now going through to the national competition. All the best to Brian Leach and the team.
We have made an important contribution to the sporting and social scene in Gisborne and in 2005 the New Zealand YMCA celebrated 150 years in New Zealand. The YMCA is well supported by numerous organisations throughout Gisborne from sporting codes, schools and private training establishments /community organisations such as the Gisborne Basketball Assocation, Gisborne Netball Centre, Gisborne Intermediate School, Turanga Ararau, Matapuna Trust and Tautoko Work Trust. We rejoice in the celebrations of the success of clubs and teams like Paikea Whalers and the Raising Suns.
The Gisborne YMCA draws our strength from our values and our longstanding experience in responding to emerging community needs by delivering quality and accessible programmes.
The Gisborne YMCA continues to strive to ensure that the needs of the community are met whether the need is for after school child care, holiday programme care, physical, spiritual or educational requirements.
We have a culture based on values, children and youth, families and whanau, community, personal development, empowerment and social responsibility.
The YMCA acknowledges the importance of Te Tiriti O Waitangi and its principle of partnership. Special thanks to Turanga Ararau and Barney Tupara for the recent training in Maori business studies and introduction to the Treaty of Waitangi.
