OSCAR incorporates school holiday and after school holiday programmes. The YMCA is the largest provider of OSCAR programme in New Zealand. Our holiday programmes operate every school holiday period. After School Care Programmes operate every day during the school term from 2.30pm to 5.45pm. Our programmes are all CYF approved. Work and Income will provide means tested funding for parents wanting to send their children to our OSCAR programmes.
We conduct an OSCAR programme that cares for children aged 5 years to 13 years after school during school terms.
165 children are registered at the YMCA after school care programme for 40 weeks per annum. The YMCA bus and three 11 seater vans collect children from 13 primary Intermediate and High schools (from Makauri to Wainui) and deliver them to the YMCA for afternoon tea, homework and fun activities until collected by their parents or caregivers.
The programme is age specific as follows:
- Nippers aged 5 to 7 years
- Juniors aged 8 to 10 years
- Seniors aged 11 to 13 years
Children are collected from their schools and looked after until collected by their caregiver. This programme ensures that no child needs to be at risk. A WINZ subsidy is available for low income families that are eligible to a subsidy - ask us for details. Talk to our staff about other subsidy's that may be available.
Oscar meals
Afternoon tea is provided. We recognize that children are hungry after school and meals are designed to meet the nutritional intake for children. We ensure that healthy options are utilised. Dietary concerns and special meals can be made to cater for your child/s, family/whanau needs and values.
How do I enrol my child in Oscar?
Enrolment is easy. Simply download our Parent contract and Registrations forms (as below) fill in the details and sign, then drop into the YMCA City, along with your payment. Please allow 1 week prior to programme start to ensure we can accommodate your child.

$12.00 per booked day
$12.50 per casual daily charge
Or apply for our YMCA subsidy for a discounted rate of $9.00 per booked day
and $9.50 per casual day. Children are collected from schools within city boundary
How do I pay?
Most parents/caregivers are entitled to a work & income subsidy, we can assist you with completing your application. A YMCA Removing Barriers subsidy is available for parents/caregivers, please ask for an application form. Payment by cheque, eftpos, cash or automatic payment can be made to the Gisborne YMCA.
