The 'Youth 4 Youth' Team at Gisborne YMCA will be planning youth events, regular hangout activities, opportunities for volunteer and leadership training, education workshops and fostering a 'Youth 4 Youth Crew'.
The program is for youth by youth. The Youth 4 Youth Team and Crew make the decisions and assist in the planning, promotion and running of programs and events offered at the YMCA.
It is important for today's youth to get to have a positive and strong impact with their community, the opportunity to bond and feel ownership outside of the school and family arena.
The program aims for Youth to develop in all areas of their lives, ie:
- Leadership skills
- Sports and academic achievement
- Personal development
- Professional development
- Cultural awareness
- Group/Team participation
- Performing Arts
- Youth dilemmas and management
Statement of Purpose
To provide a foundation of leadership skills that enhances the youth of Gisborne/Tairawhiti to confidently lead others to a positive and rewarding future that develops the future of New Zealand's young society.
To provide a training environment for four young people to build skills and work experience while contributing to their community under the supervision of an experienced Youth Coordinator/Supervisor. The YMCA will provide the training to enable the young people to be able to deliver youth events and activities to young people within the Gisborne/Tairawhiti community.
Programme Need
Statistics New Zealand 2006 state that '26.2% of people are aged under 15 years in Gisborne Region, compared with 21.5% for all of New Zealand'
Prime Minister, John Keys announced on 26th August 2009 on The Official website of the NZ Government that "as Prime Minister, I am determined to ensure our young people have the opportunities they need to deliver on their potential and ambition. I want them to have the skills and experiences they require to succeed, to gain productive employment, and to achieve good living standards. We owe our young people opportunities to deliver the best of themselves. They owe us their very best efforts in return."
Gisborne is higher than the national median for this age group with the Gisborne YMCA providing a development programme for 13 to 15 year olds at level 1 & 2 and a leadership programme for 15 to 17 year olds.
This is a programme that has a holistic approach towards youth needs and services - we are inclusive, provide a supportive pathway, opportunities to connect and strengthen young people in their community.
